Ranhill Design Challenge

Out of all the water on Earth, only 2.5 – 2.75% is fresh water, including 1.75 – 2% frozen in glaciers, ice and snow, 0.5 – 0.75% as fresh groundwater and soil moisture, and less than 0.01% of it as surface water in lakes, swamps and rivers. Many areas of the world are already experiencing stress on water availability. Due to the accelerated pace of population growth and an increase in the amount of water a single person uses, it is expected that this situation will continue to get worse. A shortage of water in the future would be detrimental to the human population as it would affect everything from sanitation, to overall health and the production of grain.

Consumable fresh water is treated at water treatment plants and delivered to end consumers through water pipelines. Treated water losses over the distribution network, before it reaches customers, referred as NRW (Non Revenue Water). NRW is defined as the difference between supplied water from water treatment plant and metered quantity to the consumers. The global volume of NRW is staggering. In Malaysia, NRW level is at 35.5%. 20.9% is due to the real loss from water pipeline leakage, and 14.6% is caused by commercial loss (unbilled consumption and apparent losses). With high level of NRW, water operators make losses, which would subsequently affect water supply services and quality.

It is a challenge to minimize the loss of treated water through pipeline leakage to reduce the NRW.

Create a cost effective water pipe burst or leakage detection system, so the water operator can be alerted timely of pipeline leakage incidents and repair can be taken place soon. The detection system has the following requirements:
  • Automated, or minimal manual operation required.
  • Leakage detection for plastic pipeline of about 20cm diameter and below. Pipeline is typically buried underground between 0.3m to 3m depth.
  • Ease of use with minimal intrusion to the pipeline.
  • Equipment mobility to allow it to be used at different locations with ease.
  • Camouflaged to avoid theft and vandalism.
  • Leakage detection alerts to be transmitted to control center via cost effective means.
  • Auto alert the control center when a detection node malfunctions.
