Design Challenge 1: Web-Based Learning and Development System

Employee learning and development management is one of key functions in human resources management. It is a function concerned with organizational activity aimed at bettering the job performance of individuals and groups in organizational settings. It can be described as an educational process which involves the sharpening of skills, concepts, changing of attitude and gaining more knowledge to enhance the performance of employee.

This also explains why typical Human Resources Information System (HRIS) will have learning and development management module to allow HR personnel to carry out their task effectively.


Besides, employee self-service feature is usually included as this allows employees to query HR related data and perform some HR transactions over the system. Employees may query their learning and development record from the system without asking the information from HR personnel. The module also lets supervisors approve training requests or development plan from their subordinates through the system without overloading the task on HR department.

It is a challenging task to manage learning record and development plan for 2000++ employees in LONGi (KCH) SDN BHD. A web-based Learning and Development System with employee self-service will definitely help to off-load HR workload and focus on other tasks.

Thus, LONGi would like to welcome FYP students to build a learning and development system with the following features:

  • Learning portal
  • Training recommendations linked to role, skillset, and career aspirations
  • Individual user learning plans
  • Setting and managing goals

Design Challenge 2: Customized Statistical and Graphical Software

Large manufacturing facility performs lots of large data analyses, statistical calculations, and also charting in order to troubleshoot production issues or improve their processes.

In the market, there are many commercial statistical software like Minitab, JMP, SPSS, SAS, etc. that provide the above functionalities. At office level, the widely used spreadsheet software, Microsoft Excel, has some statistical tools and charting packages that can be used for the above purposes. Though the commercial software tools are quite comprehensive and extensive with good user interface, the software license fees are quite hefty. Normally companies only use a fraction of the functionalities offered in these software packages, but yet need to pay for the full license fees.

Microsoft Excel, on the other hand has limited charting capability and its statistical calculation is also limited without a good user interface, rendering it not so friendly to be used.

To overcome the limitations of Excel and the expensive commercial software, LONGi would like to seek innovative student teams in Sarawak to design a customized statistical and graphical software that can fulfil the company’s operational need without having to spend lots of money to acquire commercial software that are not fully utilized.

Some system requirements are as follows:

  • Able to process data more than 100,000 points.
  • Able to perform basic statistics (e.g.: average, mean, count, standard deviation, etc.), data correlation, normality test, etc.
  • Able to perform hypothesis testing (1-Sample T, 2-Sample T, One-way ANOVA, etc.).
  • Able to perform graphical plotting and summary (e.g. boxplot, histogram, scatterplot, probability plot, bar chart, pie chart, time series plot, I chart, Xbar-R chart, etc.).
  • Able to perform Measurement System Analysis (e.g. Gage R&R study, attribute agreement analysis, linearity, etc.).

Any other proposal related to LONGi business, i.e. manufacturing related are also welcome.


Founded in year 2000, Xi’an LONGi Silicon Materials Corp., the world’s largest manufacturer of monocrystalline solar products, with a registered capital of RMB1.77 billion as of Q3 2015, and presently with total assets worth over RMB10.2 billion, has made a strategic decision to invest RM1.066 billion in an integrated solar plant via its subsidiary, Longi (Kuching) Sdn Bhd. (LKSB in short). The investment will comprise a 1GW silicon ingot and 2GW wafer plant, a 500MW PERC cells plant and a 500MW high performance module plant.

LKSB is located in Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone, Kuching, Sarawak, with a major part of its land area and building acquisition from SunEdison Kuching Sdn. Bhd. which has ceased its operation in early March 2016. Ingot and wafer production will bring about state-of-the-art technologies such as crystal pulling, diamond wire slicing and wafer thinning to Kuching, while its cell production will introduce PERC technology with efficiency as high as 20.5% compared to conventional monocrystalline cell at 19.78% and conventional multi crystalline cells at 18% efficiency - another facet of technology advancement in this emerging solar industry.

In order to cater for this range of integrated solar manufacturing plant, Longi (Kuching) Sdn Bhd is opening up abundant skilled job opportunities to recruit more than 2,000 staff before end of 2017 in stages. These workforce will be given further technical skills training and knowledge capability development in the near future.
